About Subtle Medical

Subtle Medical is a global leader in AI-powered medical imaging, using deep learning to enable faster, safer, and smarter scans. Our technology helps healthcare providers deliver high-quality imaging more efficiently—reducing scan times, improving image quality, and expanding access to care without the need for new hardware.

We are on a mission to transform the imaging experience for both providers and patients. By building responsible AI solutions that integrate seamlessly into existing workflows, we help radiology teams operate more efficiently while improving the patient experience—especially for those who struggle with long or difficult exams. Our vision is a world where every patient has access to timely diagnosis, high-quality care, and better health outcomes.

Subtle Medical offers a robust, multi-modality portfolio across MRI, PET, and CT, and continues to invest heavily in research and development. Our team includes leading radiologists, scientists, and engineers from top institutions such as Stanford, Harvard, and MIT, as well as industry veterans from GE, Philips, and Siemens.

Recognized by TIME as one of the World’s Top HealthTech Companies (2025) and named to CB Insights’ GenAI 50, Digital Health 150, and AI 100, Subtle Medical is helping shape the future of medical imaging. Today, our solutions are deployed on over 1,000 scanners worldwide, supporting hospitals and imaging centers in delivering faster scans, improved diagnostic quality, and better patient care.

Position Summary:

Subtle Medical is seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to join our Platform Engineering team. This role is focused on building, operating, and scaling the backend services and platform systems that power our AI-driven medical imaging products.

You will contribute directly to backend service development and platform systems while helping operate the cloud infrastructure and runtime environment that supports them.

We operate as a high-intensity, AI-native engineering team. AI tools are used to accelerate development, but they are not a substitute for strong engineering fundamentals. This role requires deep experience in enterprise application development, distributed systems, and production environments, with the ability to design, build, and debug reliable systems at scale.

Responsibilities

Job Duties:

  • Design, build, and maintain backend services and cloud-native systems across a distributed edge–cloud architecture using TypeScript/Node.js and Python.
  • Develop and operate on-prem gateway/edge systems that integrate with medical imaging devices via DICOM and coordinate with cloud-based processing pipelines
  • Drive system design decisions for distributed, event-driven architectures spanning on-prem and cloud environments, with a focus on scalability, performance, and maintainability of enterprise-grade systems
  • Own, operate, and evolve containerized and batch-based cloud workloads (AWS Batch, Docker, GPU-enabled jobs), ensuring reliability and observability in production
  • Contribute to and improve deployment automation, including infrastructure as code (OpenTofu/Terragrunt) and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions)
  • Contribute to production operations, monitoring, and incident response with an automation-first mindset, including logging, alerting, and system observability
  • Debug complex production issues across distributed systems, including asynchronous and batch workflows
  • Share ownership of production systems, including leading or supporting incident response and resolution during infrequent, high-impact incidents affecting core cloud and batch workloads
  • Work closely with customer success teams to troubleshoot, debug, and resolve production issues
  •   Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver and operate production systems for real-world imaging workflows
  • Participate in security, compliance, and quality processes required for healthcare systems

Qualifications

Key Competencies:

  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript/Node.js and Python, with experience building and operating enterprise-grade backend applications in production environments
  • Experience designing and operating distributed systems, including asynchronous workflows, failure handling, and scalability patterns
  • Experience contributing to infrastructure and deployment automation, including infrastructure as code (OpenTofu/Terragrunt) and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions)
  • Demonstrated senior-level experience with end-to-end ownership of enterprise-grade production systems
  • Strong hands-on experience operating production systems in AWS environments
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience, with demonstrated growth into senior-level ownership of production systems
  • Experience with both relational and NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, DynamoDB)
  • Strong production and operational mindset, including monitoring, debugging, incident response, reliability engineering, and security best practices

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience

Work Experience:

  • 8 years+

Nice to Haves:

  • Experience working with healthcare data standards (e.g., DICOM, HL7)
  • Experience with radiology imaging workflows
  • Experience in healthcare or other regulated environments
  • Startup or high-ownership team experience
  • Hands-on experience building and operating containerized workloads using Docker, including AWS batch or GPU-enabled jobs

Location:

  • Remote (USA). Approximately 5% travel required.

Benefits:

  • The opportunity to work on products that impact the health of millions of people
  • Unlimited paid-time off (PTO)
  • Stock incentive plans
  • Medical/Dental/Vision, Disability + Life Insurance
  • Parental Leave
  • 401k
